The alignment corner — small adjustments, not big overhauls

We fetishise the grand overhaul, the dramatic pivot. But genuine transformation is quieter—a series of small, precise adjustments that realign a life or a business.

Welcome to The Alignment Corner. It’s a recurring segment, a space to consider the tiny, almost imperceptible adjustments that realign a life, a business, or a nervous system.

We’ll talk about the subtle but profound shifts. The one-degree course corrections. The small hinges that swing very large doors.

Our culture fetishises the grand overhaul. The public divorce, the dramatic pivot, the ‘burn it all down and start again’ narrative. It’s spectacular and it makes for a good story. It feels like action. But it’s almost always a fiction.

It’s the admission of a deeper failure: the failure of maintenance. The failure of attention.

Radical transformation is what happens when you’ve ignored a thousand opportunities for gentle calibration. It’s the final, violent shudder of a system that has been out of alignment for far too long. Your business doesn't suddenly need a wrenching restructure; it needed a dozen difficult conversations and a corrected process map three years ago.

I’m interested in the small, deliberate acts of alignment that prevent the eventual catastrophic collapse. These are the least glamorous, most potent interventions available to us.

Think of a weekly meeting I once ran. It was a 60-minute slug of updates and half-formed ideas. The small alignment? We made it a 25-minute, standing-only meeting with a ruthless two-point agenda. The reclaimed time and energy were immediate, but the second-order effect was a culture of sharper thinking and preparation. That is an alignment.

Or consider the body. You can pursue a dramatic fitness makeover, a punishing diet, a 'new you'. Or you can align your current state. You can notice your shoulders are hunched over your keyboard and consciously drop them. You can realise your breathing is shallow and take three slow, deliberate breaths. These are not trivialities. They are direct messages to your nervous system, recalibrating its baseline from ‘threat’ to ‘control’.

These adjustments are not about adding more to your plate. They are about precision. It's not about doing more, but doing what you’re already doing with greater awareness. It’s the difference between a blunt instrument and a scalpel.

Why do we ignore them? Because they lack spectacle. Fixing your morning routine by waking up ten minutes earlier to sit with a coffee and no phone doesn't feel like 'work'. It feels too simple, too small to matter. Yet the accumulated effect of that quiet ten minutes, day after day, rewires your entire capacity for focused thought.

The real work is noticing what is slightly out of place and having the discipline to correct it, right now, without fanfare. It is the patient, unsexy work of closing the gap between where you are and where you are headed, an inch at a time.

Transformation is simply the name we give to the accumulated mass of micro-alignments we finally stopped ignoring.

TL;DR

We fetishise the grand overhaul, the dramatic pivot. But genuine transformation is quieter—a series of small, precise adjustments that realign a life or a business.
