The stars always align — most of us are just too tired to notice

The notion that the stars align for us is, for the most part, romantic nonsense. It’s a platitude for biopics and keynote speeches. But the phenomenon it describes is real. Moments do arrive when your particular skillset, the market’s specific need, and a dose of random timing intersect with startling clarity. It is not magic, it’s probability. A system clicking into place.

The problem is that most people are too tired to notice. Not unlucky, or unintelligent, but operationally exhausted. They are so deep in the daily grind, extinguishing fires and servicing debt — be it financial, technical, or emotional — that their field of vision has collapsed to the next twenty-four hours. An opportunity could be blaring like a foghorn and they wouldn’t hear it over the hum of their own machinery.

This is why readiness is the only variable that matters. Readiness has little to do with ‘hustling’. In fact, it is often the opposite. It’s the deeply unglamorous, multi-year project of creating slack in the system. Slack in your finances, so you can afford to down tools and chase a sudden opportunity. Slack in your calendar, so you have the unoccupied time to think, read, and connect disparate ideas. Slack in your team, so you aren’t the single point of failure preventing any real change.

Readiness is the boring, invisible work of building reserves. Without those reserves, the aligned moment is not a gift, it’s a threat. It’s a sudden acceleration your engine cannot handle, a weight your foundations cannot bear. It will pass you by or, worse, it will break the very thing you’ve worked so hard to maintain.

When the alignment happens, it isn’t a gentle updraft; it’s a torrential, often violent, force. It demands everything from you and your organisation, all at once. This is not the time to start getting in shape, finding funding, or hiring key people. The window of opportunity is brutally short. You must be prepared to move with a speed and conviction that feels reckless, but is in fact the only rational response.

The real work, the work that builds a legacy, is forged in the heart of this storm. You don’t build the great thing after the stars align; the alignment is the signal to begin the only work that will ever truly matter. Everything you did before — every difficult decision, every bit of infrastructure, every painstakingly acquired skill — was merely preparation for these few weeks or months of ferocious, singular focus.

The stars do align, but they don’t wait.
